Resentment is a universal emotion that most people experience at some point. It can be characterized as bitterness or lingering upset over a perceived slight, unfair treatment, or transgression. Unlike anger or rage, resentment tends to fester over time and, since the emotions are not dealt with in the moment, fosters an outsized emotional reaction or judgment toward the perceived transgressor.
Resentment, a universal emotion, is expressed uniquely by different Enneagram types. Ones, Twos, Sixes, and Nines are more prone to resentment due to their failure to express negative feelings or to avoid conflict. However, the psychological mechanisms that feed resentment differ, leading to diverse expressions with the same root emotional cause.
