The ego is clever. It has a particular kind of intellect focused on increasing its lifespan through various psychological mechanisms. In the Enneagram community, these mechanisms are “defenses” or “types.” We may have access to many skills and gifts through the less entrenched aspects of our primary Enneagram type, trifix, and instinctual stacking, which may appear intelligent. However, the “intelligence” of the ego is not true intelligence at all. Much like a cancer cell, if left unchecked, egos try to propagate themselves indefinitely through various forms of identification until they become overgrown and eventually crush the organism or the mind from which it's sprung under the weight of its growth.
